Held in different locations with different types of participants, the series is a series of collective publications resulting from asemic workshops I taught over the years. As the first two Asemic Journals were made during a calligraphy masterclass, I became more and more in terested in asemic writing (writing without meaning) and realised that it could be a great tool to teach the basics of typography, page layout, graphic design and publishing as an artistic practice.

These publications are not for sale, but I would be happy to barter the few copies I have.

This one-day workshop was held at A–Z in Berlin in conjunction with the exhibition “Mirtha Dermisache: To Be Read” organised by Regine Ehleiter, co-initiator and exhibition designer: Anja Lutz (A—Z, Berlin).

As the word suggests, “asemic” writing carries no meaning (a- is a privative prefix and seme is the smallest unit of meaning). It is a legitimate question to ask how asemic artworks can carry feelings, information and ultimately some sort of meaning without referring to any identified language or known form of communication.
Exploring ways of conveying meaning through sign tracing and page layout, this workshop will have participants work collectively to create a newsletter or journal from a civilisation that no longer exists. This journal will be printed at the end of the day, so that each participant can leave with a copy. Drawing materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your own inks and pens.
